Expressive writing means the art of expressing your emotions through the medium of words.
You can maintain your physical and emotion health under control by expressive writing.
It is said that if you are filled with grief, express yours emotions to your dear one.
But if you have no person around you to whom you can disclose your griefs, your secrets, the best method is to put it in black and white.
You have always noticed that the great poets, singers, writers have got this position when they expressed their grief in writing.
Writing can be in poetry or prose. It is up to you how you explain your emotions that touch the hearts of the readers.
Expressive writing is good for health. To know about this the first research was done in 1986.
Here volunteers had to write about the traumatic experiences. In the research it was found that in the duration of 4 months, the health of the participants started improving. Even they were also benefitted mentally. They became open minded.
What is Expressive Writing?
When we express our emotions and good or bad memories in words, it is called expressive writing. In this we can include diary writing and poems also. Though writing poetry is a little bit difficult, but writing prose is easy.
Your emotions can be liked in prose also. The only thing is that the selection of the words needs to be given care. Words can be simple but should be appealing.
Regional Language Writing:
Try to divert your writing towards the language you speak/mother tongue, because here the choice of the words is very easy. The words come automatically from the heart.
Confidence in Writing:
The writer should be confident and crystal clear in his thoughts. What message he is going to give. If you yourself are impressed with your writing, be assured that the readers will also be impressed by your writing. Always be near the truth. Do not make imaginary balloons. One example of it is the book “Stop Worrying and Start Living” written by Dale Carnegie.
There the author bet that you read 44 pages of this book, and if you do not get a way or a path to live, throw this book in the dustbin, it is of no use to you”. Means really it is sure, I have read this book, after coming to even page 30, the thought process of the reader start changing to positive aspect. The author is so confident about his writing.
Some Rules to Follow for Creative Writing:
If you are not able to write poems or prose, then also you can do expressive writing. The only rule is that take a pen and a paper and go on writing till your heart and mind becomes light.
Do not care that what you are writing will convince any other people or there are spelling and grammatical mistakes. There is no language barrier also. We can do expressive writing in any language we like. Only one thing matters and that is your emotion.
Do Not Fear If:
- Your mood is off after writing.
- Feel tired
- Feel the energy loosing
All these are short term problems.
After sometime all these problems vanish away.

These are the benefits. More to that, these days writing-hobby is becoming a status symbol also. This work is noticed as a sense of honour and respect.
For expressive writing you need not have to invest anything except your hands and mind. But you can go on earning.
Munshi Prem Chand’s grandson turned a maid to a renowned author. Baby Haldar was a Kolkata-based girl (migrated from Kashmir) having a drunkard father and then drunkard husband. The circumstances forced her to leave Kolkata.
The only language she knew was Bangla. Somehow she came to do house work in Munshi Prem Chand’s grandson.
She was sharing a hut with a Bengali lady with her three children. One day when cleaning the room, she tried to go through the books. He asked her whether she is a literate? Baby Haldar replied that she knows only Bangla. He said her to write what comes in her mind in Bangla only. She started writing in Bangla.
Munshi’s grandson himself translated her books and now she is a world renowned writer. In every bookfair around the world her books are exhibited and she is earning a good amount or royalty through it.
Even today she is working with him, doing his household works. But she never forgets to spare time for writing. Writing has taken her to the world scenario.
This is a true story. She is living in Gurgaon and working with Munshi Prem Chand’s grandson.
Even we know about Munshi Prem Chand. He spent his early life in poverty. Take example of Kaka Hathrasi, a world renowned poet, coming from a very poor family of Hathras who lost his father at a very early age. His mother came to her brother’s house who was a HALWAI.
The left over small pieces of the sweets used to come from Mama’s shop which used to be the breakfast for the family. But he never lost his humour. On every drawback in the life, he used to laugh at it and started poetry on that.
He became so popular day by day that a big businessman used to book a guest house in Mussoorie for Kaka, where he used to charge his battery for expressive writing. These two examples, who came from the poorest of the poor families became world renowned personalities.
